Banner ads showing in Google Image Results

Maybe I have been living under a rock (or without power for a week due to Gustav), but I don’t remember hearing anything about this.
When did Google start showing banner ads in their results. Saw it once and then took a while to replicate and so far, I’ve only seen it in Chrome.
